The Power of Your Beliefs-5 Steps to Achieving a Dream

The Power of Your Beliefs

When I was in my early 20’s, while living in a shared, rented apartment with a roommate, the thought of owning my own home was not in any way part of my thinking. I didn’t understand the power of your beliefs and it didn’t even occur to me that it was possible … I was very focused on finding a job, paying my rent and living from paycheque to paycheque.   I ‘believed’ that’s how it went.   I wasn’t upset or sad or frustrated about not having my own home… because it wasn’t in my reality that it was possible.  It was a limiting belief that I didn’t even realize I had.

Fast forward a few years and there was the smallest, tiniest crack in my beliefs. I had been starting to read some personal development books, (like Simple Abundance, which was a hugely popular book at the time, and one that I still love) and was listening to tapes (from mentors like Brian Tracy and Tony Robbins) and the spark of some new ideas were starting to form in my head.  I was beginning to understand the power of your beliefs! I met someone younger than me (my landlord) who had purchased several properties and was renting them out…that kind of boggled my mind.  It became obvious that it actually was possible for “me” to consider buying my own home … and my belief about ‘buying a house’ completely changed.  Once that happened, there was no stopping me … I decided I was going to buy a house. I began working with a real estate agent and going to showings, narrowing down the area that I wanted to live in and eventually figured out how to buy my first house. I did it. The process was not without it’s challenges…it wasn’t 100% ‘smooth sailing’ (I didn’t get regular bank financing and the lawyer for the seller was able to find private financing for me at the last minute!) but I didn’t give up. I didn’t let go of my desire and I kept fighting for what I wanted until the end.

Once there was the tiniest crack in my old belief system, a new belief was able to step in.  And everything changed from there.    If I were to summarize my steps, they were:

1.  Create a new belief.  Let the tiniest crack of a new belief become true for you
2.  Have a mentor, or talk to someone who has done what you want to do.  Make it real…if they did it, you can do it too.
3.  Take a small step towards what you want
4.  Take many more steps … i.e. take lots of action towards whatever it is you want
5.  Don’t give up … even when it seems like it’s impossible, do not give up

I’ve used this same pattern many times in my life, to achieve big goals.   And I’m using it again right now … creating a new belief of having an online business, creating big financial goals, seeing myself living a different kind of life.   But the first step will still be the mental shift … understanding the power of your beliefs about what is possible, that has to change first, and the rest will follow.

How about you and the power of your beliefs? Look back on your life and think about a time when you had to change your belief about ‘the way things are’ to have a different result.  How did you do it?  What belief did you change? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below.

(‘Simple Abundance’ is still a great book…check it out below!)

  1. Cori,

I love this! I’m swirling around all of this right now. I was under the misconception that I was going to NEED to stay in my dreadful corporate job forever because I’m 46, no married, and it’s safe/stable.

Misery sunk me and I decided I had to make a change or I was heading for some really bad health/anxiety problems.

And here I am, on my journey, learning every day and doing everything I can to keep my head above water during my transition. I KNOW I can make a positive impact on this world. And I am committed working very hard on my business to make that happen.

You’re right, it’s all about the mindset. Make the decision to make a change and go for it! Small steps are okay…as long as they are moving us forward.
Loving your inspirational posts! Keep up the great work!
